Swing Dance Class

Swing is a graceful dance that exhibits perfect blend between motion, sound, vision, balance and body movement. It’s history can be traced back as lindy hop. The lindy hop dance originated in the early 20th century (late 1920s) in Charleston and Foxtrot.

Swing dance is a dance of fun that requires energy to produce its uniqueness. Depending on what is to be achieved, swing dance could be simple or complex. What makes the swing dance a unique one are the swings, pins and lifts which could sometimes be complex. It also comprises of a variety of versions and styles, with each version having a unique characteristic.

What are Specific Dance Moves to Learn in the Class?

You will learn these Swing dance moves in our class:


  • Charleston


This dance move involves moving your left foot in a rock step back movement, then moving it to do a step back forward movement. Then, you move your right foot to do the rock step forward movement, and move it backward. As you do the Charleston, you let your arms swing and repeat the moves above.


  • Jitterbug


This is performed by moving your body to the right, and then to the left, then doing a rock step backward. These moves are done in repeat.


  • Jive


The dance move Jive is done by hopping using your left foot while raising your right foot. Then, you hop using using your right foot while raising your left foot. Afterwards, you do a side chasse.

The male partner leads all the above mentioned dance moves. The women just follows the lead of the male partner. All women do is dance with their elbows tucked in very close to the body with their hands at waist level.

The man pilots the dance by applying a little pressure on the hands and back of his partner to indicate the direction to which she should move her body.

What to Wear/Bring to Class

For Men and Women: Wear a comfortable shift and yoga or jogging pants. Also, wear flat shoes that enable you to easily glide on the dancefloor. As you progress, women may be required to wear a flowing dress, and men semi-formal outfits.
