Changwon K-Pop World Festival

The Singapore Preliminary: Call for Auditions

Brought to you by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Singapore, the Changwon K-Pop World Festival (Singapore Preliminary) will be returning to Singapore on 28th of June at Victoria Theatre! CHANGFE, formerly acronym as KWF is the world largest global wide K-Pop competition spanning across all 7 continent. Back in 2017, the competition had seen it’s very first Singapore’s grand finalist, Akif Halqi who later went on to being crown “Top Vocalist” in Changwon, Korea.

In bids to welcome more participants into the competition, the auditions is now open to any who works/study and reside in Singapore, excluding tourists and those of Korean descent. Interested applicants with only one parent who has Korean citizenship are eligible to join.

Like in previous years, interested applicants may compete under two categories – vocal and dance performance. After which applicants will be invited to battle it out on stage at the Singapore Preliminary of the 2019 Changwon K-Pop World Festival, where the top two acts (from Vocals and Performance category combined) will move on to participate in the next round, representing Singapore in the competition against their international counterparts.

As the competition intensifies, all performance groups will be required to lip-sync to their performance songs during their live performances. While there is no restriction on the number of members for performance groups, it is strongly recommended that they have the same number of members as the original K-Pop group of their chosen performance songs.

Under the vocal category, there is no limit to the number of vocalists per act, however, KBS reserves the right to remove any vocalist from the subsequent rounds if they are deemed to not be of significant contribution to the team. Vocal acts are now given the option to add on up to 2 additional backup dancers to spice up their stage performance.

Interested applications may submit their audition video for consideration via the online registration form on the official website (www.sgkpopworldfest.com) from now till 5th June 2019.

A Guide to Salsa Dancing

If you are new to salsa dancing, there is a high probability that you will have a feeling of anxiety and enthusiasm, especially during your first salsa dance class. You should understand that your class mates are all starters just like you and are probably feeling the same way as you.

Singapore has different Salsa Dance clubs but it is advisable to take the dance lesson if you have not practiced before. In salsa dance class, you will be taught every necessary step from beginner to the advanced level. Dancers are taught the basic dance at first, next is the partner work which requires couples mastering their turn patterns, perform multiple spins and move with style. The lesson is concluded with the “Shines”. In this step, dancers are required to showcase their style and movements to the audience. Here are some tips that will guide you through your Salsa dance lesson.

Timing
You need to be conscious of time because turning up late can delay the commencement of the class. Showing up at the end of a lesson is not a good way to start as it affects your mates and teacher.

Respect
Always dedicate maximum concentration and show a sign of respect especially when your salsa teacher is teaching

Dancing is fun
No matter how frustrated you feel, always understand that dancing is fun. Your instructor will make you realize how enjoyable salsa dance is. If you are not doing too well while practicing, just try to enjoy the dance

A comfortable type of dance
You should feel comfortable to ask anyone to dance. Salsa is a very social dance type and everybody in your class has a similar dance motive.

Feel refreshed before dancing
Make sure you freshen up and use a nice deodorant as you might scare your mates away if you have body odor. Even though they won’t complain to you, they’ll just prefer not dancing with you.

Avoid dangerous accessories
Salsa dance requires close contact; you should avoid using injury prone accessories such as belts or jewelry as this can damage your partner’s clothing.

Don’t get carried away
Don’t lose focus as a result of excitement during a dance. You should ensure that your partner feels relaxed and enjoys the dance without any worries of getting hurt

Avoid negative excuses during a dance
There is high probability of women asking men to dance hence; you should avoid any flimsy excuse that will make you reject a dance request

Salsa dancing is a means of getting social with your mates and acquiring new dancing skills. It is fun and improves your relationship with various people. Apart from the dance movements, Salsa dancing helps to keep your body in good shape and teaches you how to groom and work together with your partner.

The given tips will help you a lot during your salsa dance. Salsa dance is a nice method to shape your body by using all your muscles. After mastering the Salsa dancing steps, you can put on your dancing shoes and outfits, put on your make up, search for your partner and have fun.

Belly Dance Costumes and Designs

[rev_slider alias=”bellycostume”]

Traditional and Modern Clothing, Styles and Models

What is the first image that comes to your mind when you think of belly dancing? Probably crop tops, flowy sashes, bells, colorful scarves, and decorative clothing, especially around the waist. Although many of these garments are used in belly dancing, you can actually wear many different types of clothing to a belly dance class! You are encouraged to wear what makes you comfortable, but you can also wear stylish belly dance costumes if you like!

 Belly Dance Class Wear

Some students attend belly dance classes in sweatpants and t-shirts, but others enjoy belly dance class wear, such as harem pants, dance skirts, hip scarves or belts, and sarongs. If you are interested in attending a belly dance class, it is also highly recommended to obtain a pair of regular ballet shoes. Although belly dancers can practice in bare feet and even socks, many belly dancers wear ballet shoes, as they protect your feet and can reduce potential injuries in the classroom. Wearing socks can cause slippage, and bare feet can also be a risk for injury. Jazz shoes or jazz sandals also are an excellent choice for belly dance footwear. Wearing tennis shoes or sneakers is not allowed in most belly dance classes, as they are not considered appropriate footwear for this unique type of dance class!

Traditional and Modern Belly Dance Costumes

If you are feeling a little more creative, or enjoy the idea of dressing in classic belly dance wear, you first can learn a little bit about belly dance costumes before choosing what to wear and or buy!

Basic Costume Ideas:

  1. Hip Scarves– Any serious belly dancer will strongly consider wearing a hip scarf! Hip scarves are the signal to any viewer that they are watching belly dancing! Hip scarves are colorful scarves adorned with beads, beautiful designs, fringes, and of course, coins! Hip belts can be worn as an alternative to hip scarves, and are a little more rigid.
  2. Flowy Skirts- Belly dance performers typically wear long flowy skirts. Although in some places, pants are allowed, skirts are a more traditional garment for belly dancers. Skirt styles vary based on the origin. The three well-known styles are Turkish, Egyptian, and American Fantasy/Tribal. Various skirt styles include fish-tail shirts, chiffon skirts, and gypsy skirts.
  3. Tops/Bras- Belly dance costumes feature colorful tops and or stylish colorful bras with coins and or beads. Styles vary based on the culture and place of origin, just like skirts. Some tops include choli tops and bolero tops. Some tops/bras will include sleeves, and others do not feature sleeves.

Traditional Belly Dance Costumes:

  1. Beledi Dress- The Beledi dress is a beautifully made one-piece floor-length dress. From very simple to quite elegant, Beledi dresses typically feature a folklore look and can be made from cotton. Beledi dresses are generally considered more simple than other Belly dance costumes. They can also be made of glittery materials.
  2. Bedleh Dress- The Bedleh is quite the opposite of the Beledi Dress and is a two-piece costume that features a midriff and a heavily beaded bra for a top.Older more traditional Bedleh costumes were very heavy, however, no lighter Bedleh costumes are available with more rhinestones than beads.
