Basically, Latin ballroom dancing is a dance type performed with a partner. It was originated as a social dancing, but as time passed, it has become a dancesport. This particular dance form includes different classic and modernized styles and choreography. It involves movement of the body in style including coordinated back-and-forth steps. Also, Latin Ballroom Dance is a sensual and emotional dance, as it incorporates a certain level of connection in the facial expressions of the dancers.
What are Specific Dance Moves to Learn in the Class?
- Cha-Cha Basic Step
This basic step involves slowly stepping forward with your left foot, and then your right foot next. Then, the following steps are done quickly in the same order and ending with a slow step on your left foot. It is danced to a simple five-count rhythm (one, two, three and four OR one, two, three, cha-cha)
- Rumba Step
The rumba step involves stepping your left foot forward, and then stepping your right foot to the right. It includes a series of forward, backward and side steps that are done alternately by the leader and follower. It uses a three-step counting rhythm (quick, quick, slow).
- Salsa Dance Step
This is a basic Latin dance that is very simple and easy to learn. It involves front and back steps and also placing your weight on both legs at different counts. It is done on eight uniform counts.
This step involves the leader firmly leading his partner by placing his right hand on her back (with a series of steps and quarter-turn), so that she turns to the opposite direction. The process is repeated and at end of the move, both dancers exchange their positions.
It involves a circular movement where the two partners (initially facing each other) walk around each other, and facing the same direction throughout the move.
- Heel Turn
Heel turn involves a turn on the heel of the support foot, while holding the other foot parallel and close to it.
