A wide variety of dances are performed around the world. These dances range from classical, traditional or folk dances, to modern dances. However, one dance category that serves as an identity of a nation or region is the cultural dance.

Cultural dance is a creative form of dancing that aims to connect us to our roots and origin. It uses different instruments, beats and rhythm that aim to convey best the trait of a certain nation or region. Moreover, cultural dance is also a way for people to understand one’s culture in a creative and memorable manner.

There are 4 major dance forms under the cultural dance category: Chinese dance, Malay dance, Indian dance and Line dance. We offer dance classes on these major forms of cultural dancing. Our classes are divided into 3 levels: beginner, intermediate and advanced. Therefore, your experience in dancing these forms doesn’t matter, for our expert instructors will teach you these dances, in the best and most enjoyable way possible.

Specific Dance Forms and Moves to Learn in the Class

  1.     Chinese Dance

Chinese dance is one of the most beautiful cultural dance forms that showcase art and fluidity. Some of the most popular Chinese dances are the Dragon Dance and Lion Dance, were a group of dancers (around 3-7 men) go inside a dragon or lion, and direct it the way it should go and move. However, in our dance classes, you are going to come across these Chinese cultural dance forms:

  • Fan Dance

This is a creative Chinese dance form in which performers use colorful fans in dancing. These fans could be snapped open or closed, moved in a swirling motion or simply arch.

  • Ribbon Dance

Ribbon dancing is a vividly colorful Chinese dance form that makes use of long ribbons. These ribbons are made of silk, and are moved intricately to make the dance more appealing.

  1.     Malay Dance

Malay dancing is originally formed out of the effort of portraying Malay culture and life. It is comprised of intricate movements and colorful costumes, which show the rich culture of Malay.

In our Malay dance classes, you can learn these dance forms:

  • Zapin

This is a famous dance in Asian countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei Darussalam and Singapore. It uses traditional music through using instruments such as accordion and drum (rebana).

  • Joget/ Chakunchak

Joget is a Malay dance form that has its roots on Malacca, and has influences on Portuguese dancing. It jives with the music the instruments (such as flute, violin and gong) create. Joget is also usually danced on festive parties and celebrations.

  1.     Indian Dance

Indian dance is a sophisticated form of dancing that showcases vibrant-colored attires and snappy but sensual moves. Its famous dance moves are the kathak and kuchipudi.

  • Kathak

Kathak is performed by doing various hand movements and creative footwork. It is performed mainly by women as a social or performance dance.

  • Kuchipudi

Kuchipudi is a classical Indian dance form that exhibits intricate but fluid movements.

  1.     Line Dance

Line dance is a country-western dance form that is usually combined with other dance forms such as waltz, swing and polka. The dance moves usually done in line dancing are:

  • Cupid Shuffle

It is a basic dance step in line dancing, where you do side steps to the right while following an 8-beat count. Then, you do another side steps to the left on an 8-beat count. Afterwards, you do an 8-beat heel step in place. Lastly, do an 8-beat step in place to turn to the left.

  • Wobble

It is done with a forward jump and doing a wiggle, then doing a backward jump afterwards and doing a wiggle again. Then, you wiggle your hands to the left and to a direction you desire. Afterwards, you’re going to execute a cha cha step forward and in place.

What to Wear/Bring to Class

Some cultural dance forms may require you to come with specific traditional attires. However, you should bring clothes that you are comfortable wearing.

Ideal dance class attire for men: loose comfortable shirts and sweatpants.

Ideal dance class attire for women: Skirts, flayed pants, dresses or free tops, depending on the specific dance move; Most cultural dances also require at least two-inch heels.
